Sanitary Silicone Akemi grey 22 and calculating by joint cross-section

The second trip to the merchant costs more than the cartridge. And it usually happens because the joint cross-section was underestimated: with this sealant, the difference between 12 metres and a single one is nothing more than the difference between a 5 x 5 mm and a 20 x 15 mm joint.

Grey 22 is AKEMI's mid-grey in this range. The consumption figures apply equally to every shade.

Application area

AKEMI® Sanitary Silicone is a special joint-sealing material for expansion and connecting joints in kitchens, living and sanitary areas on ceramic tiles. Approved for interior and exterior use. Excellent and durable adhesion on non-porous silicate materials: glass, glazed ceramics, tiles, clinker, glass ceramics, email, porcelain and aluminium.

Consumption: the manufacturer's figures and what follows from them

AKEMI gives four reference points for the 310 ml cartridge:

  • Joint 5 x 5 mm → 12 metres per cartridge
  • Joint 10 x 10 mm → 3 metres
  • Joint 15 x 10 mm → 2 metres
  • Joint 20 x 15 mm → 1 metre

Why the drop from 12 to 3? Because consumption follows the cross-sectional area, not the joint width. Doubling from 5 x 5 mm to 10 x 10 mm quadruples the area — from 25 mm² to 100 mm². Consumption per metre quadruples accordingly. Calculate linearly in your head and you are out by a factor of four.

Estimating intermediate values. The manufacturer's table works consistently with around 300 ml of usable content per cartridge (25 mm² × 12 m = 300 cm³; 100 mm² × 3 m = 300 cm³, and so on). For cross-sections between the reference points this allows an estimate: metres ≈ 300,000 mm³ ÷ (width × depth in mm²) ÷ 1,000. This is a derivation from the manufacturer's table, not a manufacturer's statement — good enough for ordering; for invoicing, use the table values.

What limits the calculation at the bottom: the minimum joint size of 5 x 3 mm (width x depth). The joint must not be executed narrower or shallower, even if that would give more metres on paper.

Wastage, starting joints and residue left in the cartridge are not stated in the Technical Data Sheet — set your allowance from your own experience.

Application in brief

  1. Contact surfaces dry, clean, free of grease and dust; clean with AKEMI® Cleaner A (tiles, ceramics, glass, non-painted wood, metal) or Cleaner I (plastics, painted surfaces).
  2. Joint size min. 5 x 3 mm. Insert back-filling cords to avoid adhesion on three flanks: closed-cell PE in damp rooms and outdoors, otherwise open-cell PUR. Mask off the joint edges.
  3. Apply at +5 °C to +35 °C with dry flanks. Smoothen within 10–15 minutes using a smoothing rubber and smoothing agent; remove excess smoothing agent.
  4. Remove the masking tape before the skin forms, pulling towards the joint. Clean tools with AKEMI® Cleaner A.

Important restrictions

For professional use only. Not suited for porous, absorbent surfaces like natural and artificial stone — danger of discolouring in the marginal zone. AKEMI offers dedicated neutral cross-linked products for natural stone.

  • Releases acetic acid during hardening — not on or near acid- or corrosion-sensitive materials (iron, copper, brass, zinc, lead, concrete, materials containing lime or cement).
  • No sufficient adhesion on silicone, PE, PP, PTFE, butyl rubber, neoprene, EPDM or plasticised plastics.
  • Discolouration on tar- and bitumen-coated surfaces as well as elastomers (EPDM, APTC, neoprene).
  • On wood, metal, paints, plastics, stainless steel and sanitary acrylate no general prediction is possible — test adhesion and compatibility beforehand.
  • Not for the construction of aquariums. Read the Safety Data Sheet.

How many cartridges do I need for 30 metres?

That depends solely on the joint cross-section.

On a 5 x 5 mm joint one cartridge covers around 12 metres — so 30 metres takes roughly three cartridges. On 10 x 10 mm it is 3 metres per cartridge, so around ten cartridges for the same run. On 20 x 15 mm it would be 30. Measure the cross-section before you order.

Why does consumption rise so sharply on wider joints?

Because consumption follows the area, not the width.

From 5 x 5 mm to 10 x 10 mm, width and depth double — the cross-sectional area quadruples from 25 mm² to 100 mm². Coverage accordingly falls from 12 metres to 3 metres per the manufacturer's table. This is the factor most often overlooked when calculating.

How do I work out intermediate values?

Via the usable content of around 300 ml per cartridge.

The manufacturer's four reference points all work out at roughly 300 ml: 25 mm² × 12 m, 100 mm² × 3 m, 150 mm² × 2 m and 300 mm² × 1 m each give around 300 cm³. Intermediate cross-sections can be estimated from that. For binding figures, the manufacturer's table applies.

Does the consumption table also apply to the 400 ml foil bag?

The table in the Technical Data Sheet refers to the cartridge.

AKEMI offers grey 22 both as a 1C-cartridge of 310 ml (item number 40022) and as an alu foil bag of 400 ml (item number 40122). Art. No. 16275 is the 310 ml cartridge. The metres per cartridge stated in the data sheet apply to that container.
