Diamond Grinding Cups – Professional Surface Finishing with System

Diamond grinding cups are essential tools for tilers and craftsmen who want to efficiently and precisely work on tiles, porcelain stoneware and natural stone surfaces. In the Karl Dahm online shop, professionals will find a wide selection of high-quality grinding cups specifically developed for tough requirements on the construction site – from coarse material removal to clean finishing work.

Versatile, Durable and Precise – The Advantages of Diamond Grinding Cups

Working with hard materials such as porcelain stoneware, granite or marble requires tools that deliver top performance and reliability. Traditional abrasives quickly reach their limits here. Karl Dahm diamond grinding cups, on the other hand, stand out thanks to:

  • High material removal rate with controlled grinding precision

  • Clean and smooth surfaces due to optimal segment configuration

  • Long service life thanks to industrial-grade diamond segments

  • Versatile applications across various materials and use cases

Whether in new construction, renovations or interior work – our grinding cups deliver clean, professional results.

Typical Applications and Everyday Challenges

Porcelain stoneware is especially dense and brittle. Our grinding cups allow for precise edge grinding and reworking of socket or fixture cut-outs.

When working with natural stone, such as granite or marble, controlled grinding is essential. Grinding cups with a high segment height and open design prevent heat buildup and ensure smooth finishes.

For preparation of screed or concrete and removal of old tile adhesive, robust cup wheels are ideal. Key aspects here include removal rate, stability and dust extraction.

Tips for Optimal Application Results

  • Observe speed limits: Always operate the cup within the recommended RPM range to avoid overloading.

  • Use dust extraction: Combine with a wet/dry vacuum for cleaner work and better visibility.

  • Use the full segment height: Insufficient pressure reduces grinding efficiency – let the full diamond surface work.

  • Re-sharpen regularly: If performance drops, a short treatment in the diamond dressing stone (Item no.: 20050) can restore cutting performance.

FAQ Diamond Grinding Cups – Application, Selection & Expert Tips

What is the difference between a grinding cup and a cutting disc?

A grinding cup is used for surface material removal, while a cutting disc is designed for precise cutting.

Diamond grinding cups are designed for surface grinding and material removal on substrates such as concrete, screed, or natural stone. In contrast, a cutting disc is engineered for precise straight cuts, for example when cutting tiles or stone slabs. The two differ in geometry, segment structure and intended use. A grinding cup provides high removal performance on larger surfaces, while a cutting disc ensures a clean, accurate cutting line.

Can I use a grinding cup to work on natural stone?

Yes, many diamond grinding cups are suitable for natural stone.

To process natural stone such as granite or marble, choose high-quality diamond grinding cups with strong segment bonding. Models like DST Gold Line (Item No. 50534) or SCW Grinding Cup (Item No. 50527) provide high material removal while maintaining a smooth surface finish. Ensure controlled use with dust extraction or wet grinding to avoid heat buildup and surface damage.

What can I do if my grinding cup is no longer grinding effectively?

The segments may be clogged – sharpening or cleaning will restore performance.

If a diamond grinding cup loses efficiency, the diamond segments are often blocked by fine grinding dust. Using a diamond sharpening block (Item No. 20050) re-exposes the cutting edges and restores grinding power. Alternatively, switching to a coarser grit can break up clogged areas. Regular cleaning and sharpening significantly increase the tool’s lifespan and grinding efficiency.

How long does a diamond grinding cup last?

When used correctly, it can grind several hundred square meters.

The lifespan of a diamond grinding cup depends on the material hardness, pressure applied, speed, and the user’s technique. Under proper operating conditions, these tools can handle several hundred m² of grinding. Correct speed settings, cooling, cleaning, and periodic sharpening can greatly extend tool durability, making high-quality grinding cups a more economical choice over time.

Which machine is suitable?

Most grinding cups fit standard angle grinders with a 22.2 mm bore or M14 thread.

Most Karl Dahm diamond grinding cups are compatible with standard angle grinders. It is important to ensure the correct bore size (22.2 mm) or M14 thread and maximum allowable RPM. For dust-reduced grinding, we recommend using dust extraction guard systems. For large surfaces, floor grinding machines may be more efficient.

Are grinding cups suitable for removing adhesive residues?

Yes – PKD and spiked grinding discs are especially effective.

To remove tile adhesive, epoxy, paint coatings or leveling compounds, we recommend DST Spikes (Item No. 50519) or the PKD Special Grinding Disc (Item No. 50341). Their aggressive PKD or diamond spike segments allow fast and efficient removal of even stubborn coatings, making them ideal tools for renovation and restoration work.

What does turbo segmenting mean?

Turbo segments increase cooling and material removal efficiency.

Turbo segments feature spiral-shaped or slanted grooves that improve heat dissipation and dust removal during grinding. This results in faster material removal, better cooling performance and longer segment durability. They are particularly beneficial for large surface grinding or dry grinding applications, where cooling is essential.

Can grinding cups also be used for wet grinding?

Yes, many grinding cups are suitable for both dry and wet use.

Many diamond grinding cups work with both dry and wet grinding methods. Wet grinding reduces dust, improves cooling and extends tool life. Ensure your machine is suitable for wet operation and that water is controlled safely. Wet grinding is especially advantageous during long grinding sessions or when processing heat-sensitive materials.

What segment height is ideal for my project?

For heavy-duty work choose at least 7 mm, for standard interior work 5 mm is sufficient.

The segment height of a diamond grinding cup determines its lifespan. For intensive daily or industrial use, choose segments 7 mm or higher, such as on the DST Profi Thermojet (Item No. 50507 / 50509). For standard renovation tasks, 5 mm segment height is usually sufficient. Greater segment height means more diamond material and longer tool life.
