FAQ on Tile Cleaning & Stone Care – Information on Sealing, Cleaning & Surface Protection

When should you apply a sealer?

A sealer should only be applied once the tile adhesive and grout have fully cured. This ensures that the protective layer can penetrate the surface effectively and provide lasting protection.

Sealing should be carried out only after the adhesive and grout have completely hardened. Depending on temperature and material structure, this can take several days or longer. Applying the sealer before the first use creates a deep, long-lasting protective barrier that prevents dirt, moisture and oils from penetrating the stone or tile. This keeps natural stone, porcelain stoneware and ceramic surfaces easier to maintain and resistant to staining.

How long does a sealer last?

A high-quality sealer typically lasts between 1 and 5 years. The exact lifespan depends on product quality, surface use and maintenance.

The durability of a sealing treatment varies based on the area of application, frequency of use and cleaning habits. Surfaces exposed to heavy wear, such as kitchen floors or outdoor areas, may require re-sealing sooner than lightly used interior surfaces. On average, the protective effect remains effective for 1 to 5 years. Regular gentle cleaning helps extend the lifespan. When water absorption increases, a renewal should be applied.

Can these products be used on all types of tiles?

No, not all products are suitable for every material. Always check the manufacturer's instructions to avoid damage or discoloration.

Different surfaces such as natural stone, porcelain stoneware, marble or engineered stone react differently to cleaning products and sealers. Some products contain acids or solvents that may harm sensitive materials. For this reason, it is essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and test on a small, hidden area first. This helps prevent surface dulling, staining or etching.

Which products are suitable for removing oil stains from natural stone?

Special oil and grease removers such as AKEMI Intensive Cleaner or FINALIT No. 1 are recommended, as they penetrate deep into the stone’s pores.

Natural stone is porous and can quickly absorb oils and greasy substances. Regular household cleaners are usually not powerful enough to remove these stains completely. Products like AKEMI Intensive Cleaner (Art. No. 12137) or FINALIT No. 1 (Art. No. 11168) are formulated to dissolve and lift oil residues from within the stone structure. For stubborn stains, repeated treatment may be necessary to restore an even appearance.

What should I do about epoxy residue?

Use a special epoxy haze remover such as Epex Clean, as standard cleaners are ineffective on epoxy resin films.

Epoxy residue often appears after grouting with reaction resin mortar. This residue cannot be removed using regular cleaning agents. Epex Clean (Art. No. 11242) is specifically designed to break down epoxy film without damaging the surface. The sooner the product is applied after installation, the easier the residue is to remove, as epoxy becomes harder and more resistant over time.

Is a color enhancer also a protective sealer?

A color enhancer deepens the natural appearance of the stone but does not replace the protective function of a sealer.

Color enhancers are used to improve and highlight the natural color and grain of stone surfaces. However, they only provide visual enhancement and do not offer full protection against stains, moisture or daily wear. For complete surface care, a color enhancer should be used together with a separate impregnating sealer to ensure lasting surface protection.

How do I remove limescale residues?

Limescale can be removed using a limescale or cement residue remover. However, these should only be used on acid-resistant surfaces.

Limescale and cement haze frequently appear in bathrooms or after grouting work. Products such as AKEMI Cement Film Remover (Art. No. 11257) or FINALIT No. 9 (Art. No. 11170) effectively dissolve mineral deposits. These cleaners contain acid and are therefore only suitable for acid-resistant surfaces like porcelain stoneware or granite. Do not use them on marble, limestone or polished stone surfaces, as they can cause etching or dull spots.
