Dry core bits are designed to be used without water and are typically operated with an angle grinder. This makes them ideal for situations where no water connection is available. They perform very well on hard materials such as porcelain tiles, ceramics, and natural stone. Wet core bits, on the other hand, are used with a constant water supply. The water prevents overheating, reduces dust formation, and noticeably increases the durability of the diamond segments. Wet drilling is primarily used indoors, where clean and precise work is required.
In summary: dry core bits are mobile and flexible, whereas wet core bits are longer-lasting, cleaner, and more precise.
A speed of around 10,000 RPM is recommended when using dry core bits, which corresponds to the operating range of most angle grinders. However, the drilling technique is just as important as the speed. The core bit should be guided with minimal pressure to avoid damaging the diamond segments. A gentle circular motion during drilling minimizes friction and allows heat to dissipate more effectively. For longer drilling operations, brief pauses are recommended to let the bit cool down, increasing both the drilling performance and the lifespan of the tool.
Dry core bits typically come with an M14 thread, making them compatible with most angle grinders. If drilling is preferred using a standard power drill, the core bit can be converted by using a suitable adapter. There are also versions with special thread types for specific applications. It is therefore important to check the compatibility of the tool and the core bit before purchasing.
The available diameter range extends from very small sizes suitable for holes for screws or cables, up to larger diameters used for sockets, fittings, or pipe penetrations. Users who frequently need several different hole sizes benefit from core bit sets, which provide several commonly used diameters in one organized storage case.
When working with very small diameters, air circulation inside the core bit is limited, and the tool can heat up quickly. The paraffin inside the core bit melts during drilling and acts as an integrated cooling system. This keeps the temperature under control, protects the diamond grains, and allows safe drilling even in very hard and delicate materials such as porcelain stoneware or glazed surfaces.
Sparks indicate overheating or excessive pressure during drilling. In such a case, the pressure should be reduced immediately and the core bit should be allowed to cool down by letting it run freely in the air for a short time. It is then advisable to continue drilling with a slight circular motion so that less friction occurs. If overheating is ignored, the diamond segment will lose sharpness more quickly and the lifespan of the core bit will be significantly shortened.
Most dry core bits are designed for drilling depths of up to about 35 mm. If the material is thicker, it is effective to start drilling from the front and finish from the opposite side to avoid chipping. It can also be helpful to drill in short intervals and allow the core bit time to cool, maintaining stable performance.
Matrixtec is a technology that optimizes the structure of the diamond segment, ensuring that heat generated during drilling is evenly distributed. This reduces wear and maintains the drilling performance for a longer time. The technology is particularly advantageous when working with extremely hard surfaces such as porcelain stoneware, granite, or high-density ceramic materials, making it ideal for continuous professional use.
Users who regularly drill holes with different diameters work more efficiently with a core bit set. All required sizes are stored together and ready for immediate use, eliminating the need to search for individual bits. Additionally, sets are usually more cost-effective than purchasing each bit separately. Many sets also include adapters so that they can be used directly with different tools.
