The integrated spacer design ensures a consistent 3 mm joint width, which is particularly important in outdoor environments to allow for thermal expansion, water drainage and stress distribution. Karl Dahm leveling components are designed to ensure secure positioning even during vertical installation. The tightening caps / rotary caps hold the tiles in place without slipping, allowing you to align wall coverings, retaining walls, facade cladding and exterior base sections with precision. A tile leveling system prevents lippage (height differences) between adjacent tiles and ensures a straight, uniform joint layout. For small tile formats or perfectly prepared surfaces, using a leveling system is not always required. However, in nearly all outdoor installations, the system speeds up alignment, improves flatness, and results in a visually superior finished surface—especially for large porcelain terrace slabs.
A wedge leveling system requires a wedge to be inserted into a clip and tightened, sometimes using a special tension plier.
The Karl Dahm rotating leveling system works differently: The rotary tightening cap is twisted by hand to create uniform pressure and align the tile edges. This makes the system faster, easier and more comfortable to use, while the caps are reusable, offering significant cost benefits for large or repeated projects.
The required number of leveling clips per square meter is determined by the dimensions and layout pattern of the tiles. The larger the tile, the fewer clips are needed, because the number of contact and alignment points decreases with larger edges. Practical reference values are: around 22 clips per m² for 60 × 30 cm, around 11 clips per m² for 60 × 60 cm, about 14 clips per m² for 90 × 40 cm, and roughly 8 clips per m² for slabs in 120 × 60 cm format. These values make it easier to calculate material quantity accurately and ensure a smooth, uninterrupted installation.
