The silicone joint in the shower is the point at which the customer calls back after two years. Not because it leaks — because it turns black. For the tiler, what matters is what mould-inhibiting properties actually deliver and where their limit lies.
Sanitary grey 18 is AKEMI's shade that carries the name of the application area. The additive itself applies to the whole range.
AKEMI® Sanitary Silicone is a special joint-sealing material for expansion and connecting joints in kitchens, living and sanitary areas on ceramic tiles. Approved for interior and exterior use. Excellent and durable adhesion on non-porous silicate materials: glass, glazed ceramics, tiles, clinker, glass ceramics, email, porcelain and aluminium.
The manufacturer words the property precisely: AKEMI® Sanitary Silicone has mould-inhibiting properties. Inhibiting, not mould-proof. That is not marketing understatement but a deliberate distinction — and the reason the manufacturer additionally refers to IVD-leaflet 14, "sealants and mould infestation". Planning and executing the joint according to that leaflet means knowing the boundary conditions under which the additive can work.
Part of that picture is what the additive brings with it: sealing materials with fungicide additives must not be used in the construction of aquariums. That is the flip side of the same property and it is stated in the data sheet.
For the joint itself: after hardening the sealant is odourless and physiologically harmless, and the hardened sealant is not harmful to health. It is also resistant to water stress and has high resistance to abrasion, tearing and notching — the preconditions for a shower joint not to give up early.
And what execution contributes: contact surfaces dry, clean, free of grease and dust; dry flanks; in damp rooms closed-cell PE back-filling cords that do not absorb water. A joint holding moisture at its base works against any additive.

The wording is deliberate: the additive inhibits infestation, it does not exclude it. AKEMI additionally refers to IVD-leaflet 14, "sealants and mould infestation", which covers this subject. The boundary conditions — ventilation, cleaning, how the room is used — lie outside what any sealant can deliver.
The manufacturer states explicitly in the Technical Data Sheet: sealing materials with fungicide additives must not be used in the construction of aquariums. This applies to every shade in the range, sanitary grey 18 included.
After hardening the product is also odourless and physiologically harmless. It is very low emission according to GEV EMICODE® EC1PLUS and classified in emission class A+. During application: use AKEMI® The Liquid Glove to protect your hands and read the Safety Data Sheet.
Hardened sealant can only be removed mechanically, non-hardened sealant with AKEMI® Cleaner A or I depending on the surface. Only then are the flanks receptive again — they must be dry, clean, free of grease and dust. Extruding over the old joint is ruled out anyway: sufficient adhesion cannot be achieved on silicone.
