Sanitary Silicone Akemi silver grey 05 and matching the shade to the cement joint

The customer does not see the tile and does not see the joint — they see the transition. And if the silicone joint in the corner carries a different grey from the cement joint across the surface, that is exactly what gets noticed. Silver grey 05 is among AKEMI's light greys in this range and one of the shades most frequently chosen to match joint work in sanitary and kitchen areas.

A word of honesty: AKEMI does not assign any silicone shade to a particular grout colour, and neither do we. Whether silver grey 05 suits your grout is decided on the object — not in a catalogue.

Application area

AKEMI® Sanitary Silicone is a special joint-sealing material for expansion and connecting joints in kitchens, living and sanitary areas on ceramic tiles. Approved for interior and exterior use. Excellent and durable adhesion on non-porous silicate materials: glass, glazed ceramics, tiles, clinker, glass ceramics, email, porcelain and aluminium.

Shade matching: why the sample joint is the only reliable route

Grey is not simply grey. AKEMI offers the Sanitary Silicone in around 50 shades; among the greys alone you will find silver grey 05, joint grey 08, light grey 09, grey white 10, pale grey 11, bright grey 12, thistle grey 13, silk grey 14, flannel grey 15, stone grey 17, sanitary grey 18, agate grey 19, platinum grey 20, concrete grey 21, grey 22 and anthracite 23 side by side. The steps between neighbouring shades are small — on screen or in a printed colour fan they are barely assessable.

On top of that, the grout itself changes as it sets, and perception depends on light colour, tile surface and joint width. Matching against a dry sample in a sample case therefore says little about the result in the finished shower.

The manufacturer phrases it as a general obligation of the user: conduct performance tests, including trials of the product in an inconspicuous area or fabrication of a sample piece. In practice for the tiler: a short sample joint within the finished surface, hardened, assessed in daylight and under artificial light. It costs half an hour and prevents the argument at handover.

AKEMI provides a dedicated colour chart for the Sanitary Silicone. Special colours are available on request according to the manufacturer.

Application in brief

  1. Contact surfaces dry, clean, free of grease and dust; clean with AKEMI® Cleaner A (tiles, ceramics, glass, non-painted wood, metal) or Cleaner I (plastics, painted surfaces).
  2. Joint size min. 5 x 3 mm. Insert back-filling cords to avoid adhesion on three flanks: closed-cell PE in damp rooms and outdoors, otherwise open-cell PUR. Mask off the joint edges.
  3. Apply at +5 °C to +35 °C with dry flanks. Smoothen within 10–15 minutes using a smoothing rubber and smoothing agent; remove excess smoothing agent.
  4. Remove the masking tape before the skin forms, pulling towards the joint. Clean tools with AKEMI® Cleaner A.

Important restrictions

For professional use only. Not suited for porous, absorbent surfaces like natural and artificial stone — danger of discolouring in the marginal zone. AKEMI offers dedicated neutral cross-linked products for natural stone.

  • Releases acetic acid during hardening — not on or near acid- or corrosion-sensitive materials (iron, copper, brass, zinc, lead, concrete, materials containing lime or cement).
  • No sufficient adhesion on silicone, PE, PP, PTFE, butyl rubber, neoprene, EPDM or plasticised plastics.
  • Discolouration on tar- and bitumen-coated surfaces as well as elastomers (EPDM, APTC, neoprene).
  • On wood, metal, paints, plastics, stainless steel and sanitary acrylate no general prediction is possible — test adhesion and compatibility beforehand.
  • Not for the construction of aquariums. Read the Safety Data Sheet.

Will silver grey 05 match my grout?

That can only be decided on the object, not from a colour table.

AKEMI does not assign silicone shades to grout colours. The manufacturer explicitly obliges the user to conduct performance tests in each particular case — including trials in an inconspicuous area or fabrication of a sample piece. Lay a short sample joint within the finished surface and assess it after hardening, in daylight and under artificial light.

What is the difference between silver grey 05 and joint grey 08?

Two independent shades within the same AKEMI range, each with its own colour number.

The AKEMI range comprises around 50 shades, including roughly a dozen grey gradations alone. This article is exclusively silver grey 05 (manufacturer item number 40005). Which of those shades are listed at KARL DAHM can be seen in the colour overview on this page. Special colours are available on request according to the manufacturer.

Is silver grey 05 also available in the 400 ml alu foil bag?

From the manufacturer yes — but this article is the 310 ml cartridge.

AKEMI offers silver grey 05 both as a 1C-cartridge of 310 ml (item number 40005) and as an alu foil bag of 400 ml (item number 40105). Art. No. 16259 refers to the 310 ml cartridge. The foil bag requires a suitable sausage gun and the corresponding nozzle.

How do I achieve an even joint appearance?

The decisive factor is the 10 to 15 minute window after application.

The product is applied and smoothened within 10 to 15 minutes — optimal smoothing is achieved with a smoothing rubber and smoothing agent. Skin formation time at 23 °C and 50 % relative air humidity is approximately 15 minutes; after that the surface can no longer be reworked cleanly. The masking tape must be removed before the skin forms, pulling in the direction of the joint. Excess smoothing agent must be removed to avoid staining.
