Sanitary Silicone Akemi white 02 for connecting joints on sanitary ware and baths

In a bathroom, white is not a shade — it is a category. Bath, washbasin, WC and shower tray are white, and the tile next to them often is too. The connecting joint runs exactly along that edge. White 02 is AKEMI's standard white in this range and covers by far the most common case on a sanitary site.

Important when reordering: AKEMI offers several whites within the same range — joint white 03, ancient white 04, grey white 10 and sanitary white 75. Anyone ordering simply "white" risks the wrong shade arriving on site. That is why colour number 02 appears throughout.

Application area

AKEMI® Sanitary Silicone is a special joint-sealing material for expansion and connecting joints in kitchens, living and sanitary areas on ceramic tiles. Approved for interior and exterior use. Excellent and durable adhesion on non-porous silicate materials: glass, glazed ceramics, tiles, clinker, glass ceramics, email, porcelain and aluminium.

The silicone joint is a maintenance joint

This is the decisive point for any connecting joint in a bathroom: a sprayable sealant joint is not a permanent construction but a component with a limited service life that is inspected regularly and renewed when necessary. It does not replace the bonded waterproofing behind the tile; it closes the movement joint at the surface.

AKEMI lists the Sanitary Silicone as conforming with IVD-leaflet 3-1 — "constructive design and sealing of joints in sanitary areas and damp rooms, part 1: sealing with sprayable sealants". Executing the joint according to that leaflet keeps the constructional requirements in check: adequate joint cross-section, avoidance of adhesion on three flanks, dry flanks, clean substrate preparation.

In practice at the bath: joint size at least 5 x 3 mm, insert a back-filling cord, contact surfaces free of grease and dust, working temperature between +5 °C and +35 °C. Permissible total deformation is 20 % — the joint must therefore be dimensioned so that the expected movement stays within those 20 %.

Application in brief

  1. Contact surfaces dry, clean, free of grease and dust; clean with AKEMI® Cleaner A (tiles, ceramics, glass, non-painted wood, metal) or Cleaner I (plastics, painted surfaces).
  2. Joint size min. 5 x 3 mm. Insert back-filling cords to avoid adhesion on three flanks: closed-cell PE in damp rooms and outdoors, otherwise open-cell PUR. Mask off the joint edges.
  3. Apply at +5 °C to +35 °C with dry flanks. Smoothen within 10–15 minutes using a smoothing rubber and smoothing agent; remove excess smoothing agent.
  4. Remove the masking tape before the skin forms, pulling towards the joint. Clean tools with AKEMI® Cleaner A.

Important restrictions

For professional use only. Not suited for porous, absorbent surfaces like natural and artificial stone — danger of discolouring in the marginal zone. AKEMI offers dedicated neutral cross-linked products for natural stone.

  • Releases acetic acid during hardening — not on or near acid- or corrosion-sensitive materials (iron, copper, brass, zinc, lead, concrete, materials containing lime or cement).
  • No sufficient adhesion on silicone, PE, PP, PTFE, butyl rubber, neoprene, EPDM or plasticised plastics.
  • Discolouration on tar- and bitumen-coated surfaces as well as elastomers (EPDM, APTC, neoprene).
  • On wood, metal, paints, plastics, stainless steel and sanitary acrylate no general prediction is possible — test adhesion and compatibility beforehand.

What is the difference between white 02 and sanitary white 75?

They are two distinct shades within the same AKEMI range.

AKEMI offers the Sanitary Silicone in around 50 shades, several of them whites: white 02, joint white 03, ancient white 04, grey white 10 and sanitary white 75. This article is exclusively white 02 (manufacturer item number 40002). Which white suits your ceramic and your grout can only be decided on the object — the manufacturer generally recommends a trial in an inconspicuous area or a sample joint.

Can I apply white 02 straight over an old silicone joint?

No — sufficient adhesion cannot be achieved on silicone.

The manufacturer explicitly names silicone among the surfaces with generally adhesion-repellent properties, alongside polyolefins such as PE and PP, PTFE, butyl rubber, neoprene and EPDM. The old joint must therefore be removed completely: hardened sealant can only be removed mechanically, non-hardened sealant with AKEMI® Cleaner A or I depending on the surface. Only then are the flanks receptive again.

Which substrates does white 02 adhere to reliably?

Excellent and durable adhesion is achieved on non-porous silicate materials.

The manufacturer names glass, glazed ceramics, tiles, clinker, glass ceramics, email and porcelain, as well as aluminium. On surfaces such as wood, paints, glazes, plastics, melamine or epoxy resin, powder coatings, anodising, stainless steel or sanitary acrylate no general prediction is possible — a test of adhesion and compatibility must be carried out before use. In practice this mainly concerns acrylic baths and shower trays.

How long does an unopened cartridge keep?

At least 24 months from production if stored dry and cool.

Storage temperature should be between 5 °C and 25 °C, in the closed original container. For a business working across changing sites this means the shade can be stocked without concern, but an unheated van in winter or a loft store in summer are unsuitable for storage.
